Now don\u2019t get me wrong, AutoCAD has so many tools that make drafting easier, but every now and then, a simple construction line can come in handy.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not already familiar with them, AutoCAD has a couple of built in-tools to help you out. An xline has no start or end points\u2013it extends in both directions to infinity. A ray, however, has one end point\u2013the start point\u2013and then continues to infinity. Shown below, both are drawn the same way, by first specifying the start point and then by specifying either a through point or an angle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9136\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/XLine_2_idhkye.jpg\" alt=\"xline and ray in AutoCAD\" width=\"1088\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/XLine_2_idhkye.jpg 1088w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/XLine_2_idhkye-300x71.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/XLine_2_idhkye-1024x243.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/XLine_2_idhkye-768x182.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1088px) 100vw, 1088px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Both create their own object type (an xline and a ray), which are similar to other objects. You can move, copy, offset, etc. and erase them when you\u2019re done. You\u2019ll probably want to do the latter, as they will appear when you plot or print. Of course, if you need to keep them, you might want to place them on a non-plotting layer.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"just-do-it\">Just Do It!<\/h2>\n<p>Below are some examples of using xlines and rays for. Yes, there are other tools and workflows that could produce the same thing, but that\u2019s the beauty of AutoCAD\u2013there\u2019s always different ways to achieve the same thing. Most of the time, one way is no better or worse than another, so if you\u2019re more comfortable laying out some construction lines, go ahead!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-9137\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/XLine_3_wohasf.jpg\" alt=\"construction lines in AutoCAD\" width=\"689\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/XLine_3_wohasf.jpg 689w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/XLine_3_wohasf-300x88.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 689px) 100vw, 689px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the techniques we learned in our drafting classes can still be useful. You can still apply them today.
