{"id":8735,"date":"2019-01-08T07:00:22","date_gmt":"2019-01-08T15:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/?p=8735"},"modified":"2020-04-07T14:46:38","modified_gmt":"2020-04-07T21:46:38","slug":"fields-text-smarter-tuesday-tips-brandon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/fields-text-smarter-tuesday-tips-brandon\/","title":{"rendered":"Fields &#8211; Make Your Text Smarter: Tuesday Tips With Brandon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;ve ever come across one of my two-minute tip videos on <a href=\"http:\/\/youtube.com\/c\/cadintentions\">YouTube<\/a> you may already know this, but I am a big proponent of automating tasks and finding ways to remove unnecessary steps wherever I can, especially when it comes to AutoCAD. <!--more-->That&#8217;s why I wanted to use my first Tuesday Tip article to share some of my favorite ways to use fields in Autocad. (And be sure to check out the video at the end of the article!)<\/p>\n<p>In general, I like to use fields any time it makes sense to automatically populate information that has a tendency to change as you progress through your design while still needing to keep drawings accurate and up-to-date.<\/p>\n<p>For example, a great use of a field is to include one in your viewport scale label\/attribute text to show the current scale of said viewport. Setting this field up only takes a few seconds, but it can be a huge lifesaver if the viewport scale is ever changed, preventing possible headaches if the label were just static text.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8740 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/image1_jlh01v.jpg\" alt=\"Add AutoCAD Field\" width=\"940\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/image1_jlh01v.jpg 940w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/image1_jlh01v-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/image1_jlh01v-768x556.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 940px) 100vw, 940px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To add the Field, simply select the text you would like to replace in your label or attribute, right-click, and choose <em>Insert Field<\/em> (see photo above).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8742\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/image2_dcfblg.jpg\" alt=\"Viewport AutoCAD\" width=\"1413\" height=\"698\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/image2_dcfblg.jpg 1413w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/image2_dcfblg-300x148.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/image2_dcfblg-1024x506.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/image2_dcfblg-768x379.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1413px) 100vw, 1413px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once in the Field dialog box, change the Field category to Objects and select the Object option under Field names. Now simply click the cross-hair circled in the image to bring up the select object prompt. To grab our scale value choose the Custom Scale option under Property and choose the format you would like to use to display your scale. You can see a preview of how the Field will display in the top right; I stuck with a standard #:1 in this example.
