The good news is that whether you need to manipulate an individual object or many objects, AutoCAD provides plenty of easy ways to do this. In this Tuesday Tip, we&#8217;ll look at the many ways AutoCAD aids you in selecting objects. I call these tools &#8220;Selection Assist Commands.&#8221;<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"the-guts-of-selecting-objects\">The \u201cGuts\u201d of Selecting Objects<\/h2>\n<p>First, let&#8217;s take a look at the \u201cguts\u201d (or settings) of selecting objects in AutoCAD. Simply right-click anywhere in your drawing and choose Options from the context menu (alternatively, type OP in the command line).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-8409 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select1_rbxqbc.jpg\" alt=\"AutoCAD Selection Tips\" width=\"257\" height=\"381\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select1_rbxqbc.jpg 257w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select1_rbxqbc-202x300.jpg 202w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the Options dialog box, click the Selection tab. Everything related to selecting objects is in there:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8410\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select2_ce157m.jpg\" alt=\"AutoCAD Selection Tips\" width=\"720\" height=\"581\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select2_ce157m.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select2_ce157m-300x242.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not going to discuss all of the settings in this tab, but I would like to point out a few really important (and cool) ones. The first one is the Pickbox size setting. I&#8217;m always asked by users \u201cWhy is the pickbox so small?\u201d Well, this setting is why. Simply adjust the setting bar to the desired size.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8411\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select3_strj9w.jpg\" alt=\"AutoCAD Selection Tips\" width=\"520\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select3_strj9w.jpg 520w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select3_strj9w-300x141.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 520px) 100vw, 520px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Many of these settings have been discussed in other tips, but two that I want to mention are the selection limits fields for both the Properties palette and grips. As long as you have a fairly good machine, set these values to their maximum amount in order to optimize your selection experience in AutoCAD. The maximum for both is 32767.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8412\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select4_okqz40.jpg\" alt=\"AutoCAD Selection Tips\" width=\"720\" height=\"581\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select4_okqz40.jpg 720w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select4_okqz40-300x242.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"selecting-objects-first\">Selecting Objects First<\/h2>\n<p>Many people don\u2019t realize this, but you can actually make a selection set before you start a command. In fact, AutoCAD gives you several ways to do so besides the standard window and crossing window. Click in empty space and, as I always tell everyone, \u201cWhen you don\u2019t know what to do, look to the command line window!\u201d You&#8217;ll notice that there are three command line options that appear: Fence, WPolygon, and CPolygon.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select5_xenkd4.jpg\" alt=\"AutoCAD Selection Tips\" width=\"772\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select5_xenkd4.jpg 772w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select5_xenkd4-300x79.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select5_xenkd4-768x203.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 772px) 100vw, 772px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Each one is there to assist you in making a selection set in congested areas of your drawing. The Fence option is probably my favorite, as it allows you to simply draw a fence (like drawing a line), and any object that touches the fence will also be selected.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8414\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select6_ywhbd2.jpg\" alt=\"AutoCAD Selection Tips\" width=\"800\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select6_ywhbd2.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select6_ywhbd2-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select6_ywhbd2-768x373.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The WPolygon selection assist tool allows you to draw a polygonal selection window. This is very helpful when you need to make a selection set of a specific set of objects but you need to go around objects that you do <em>not<\/em> want to select. Plus, it doesn\u2019t matter which direction you begin the window polygon, it will always be a window polygon, only selecting objects fully inside it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8415\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select7_revwfl.jpg\" alt=\"AutoCAD Selection Tips\" width=\"800\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select7_revwfl.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select7_revwfl-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select7_revwfl-768x495.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The last one, CPolygon, does the same as the window polygon, except that it is a crossing polygon, and it will select objects both within the polygonal window as well as those touching any part of it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select8_to5kvr.jpg?cld_params=w_auto:100:800\/q_auto,w_auto:100:800\" alt=\"AutoCAD Selection Tips\" width=\"800\" height=\"548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select8_to5kvr.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select8_to5kvr-300x206.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Select8_to5kvr-768x526.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, the other hidden little tip is that you can use any of these selection assist tools <em>after you start the command as well<\/em>.
