AutoCAD ToolTips, that is. From the newbie to whom they&#8217;re essential, to the crusty veteran who (thinks he) knows it all, opinions differ on how they display. Some may think they show up too fast, and others may want them to appear faster.<!--more-->You\u2019re probably aware you can turn them on or off, but you have more control over them than you may think.<\/p>\n<p>As with so many AutoCAD functions, the secret lies in the Options dialog. Under the Display tab, you\u2019ll find the various ToolTip controls.<\/p>\n<p>There are two main controls, along with some sub-controls.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8240\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_1_qa7szs.jpg\" alt=\"AutoCAD ToolTips\" width=\"751\" height=\"611\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_1_qa7szs.jpg 751w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_1_qa7szs-300x244.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 751px) 100vw, 751px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"exploring-your-options\">Exploring Your Options<\/h2>\n<p>The first thing to realize is that there are two types of ToolTips. The tip that displays when you hover over an object in the editor is a rollover ToolTip. You can turn these off by unchecking the Show rollover ToolTips control.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8241\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_2_osirlz.jpg\" alt=\"AutoCAD ToolTips\" width=\"620\" height=\"251\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_2_osirlz.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_2_osirlz-300x121.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The other type of ToolTip is for Ribbon and Toolbar commands. Like rollovers, you can turn them on or off here, but you also get some flexibility in how they display. Most of the ToolTips display in two modes: a compact view (shown below left), and an expanded view (below right).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8242\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_3_phufzu.jpg\" alt=\"AutoCAD ToolTips\" width=\"801\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_3_phufzu.jpg 801w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_3_phufzu-300x217.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_3_phufzu-768x556.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 801px) 100vw, 801px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps you don\u2019t want to completely disable the tips, but you don\u2019t want them to display so quickly. Just bump up the number of seconds to display from the default of 1.000. Of course, you can do the same with the expanded mode. By default, it\u2019s set to a second longer than the initial display. What if you want to see the expanded tip all the time? Just set its display to 0.000 seconds!<\/p>\n<p>Notice also that you can show or suppress any shortcut keys that are associated with the command. I love my keyboard shortcuts, so I leave that on. Maybe I\u2019ll pick up a shortcut I wasn\u2019t aware of.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"yet-another-tooltip-tip\">Yet Another ToolTip Tip!<\/h2>\n<p>I previously said that regular ToolTips are for Ribbon and Toolbar commands. That\u2019s true, but they also control the tips in some other places, like dialog boxes, the Application menu, and even the Sheet Set Manager. You can see examples of those below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8243\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_4_znflsf.jpg?cld_params=w_auto:100:1046\/q_auto,w_auto:100:1046\" alt=\"AutoCAD ToolTips\" width=\"1046\" height=\"1144\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_4_znflsf.jpg 1046w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_4_znflsf-274x300.jpg 274w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_4_znflsf-936x1024.jpg 936w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/ToolTips_4_znflsf-768x840.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1046px) 100vw, 1046px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Now for the final tip. If you\u2019re like me, you might like to be able to temporarily switch off these large, preview style ToolTips as they sometimes get in your way. Going to Options is cumbersome and even typing TOOLTIPS on the command line can be as well.<\/p>\n<p>You could use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/autocad-command-alias-editor-tuesday-tips-frank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Command<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/autocad-command-alias-editor-tuesday-tips-frank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alias<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/autocad-command-alias-editor-tuesday-tips-frank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Editor<\/a> to set TT to the TOOLTIPS command, then just switch from 1 to 0 (or vice versa), or even better, use the <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/search-result\/caas\/CloudHelp\/cloudhelp\/2016\/ENU\/AutoCAD-Customization\/files\/GUID-96AEAE32-CDA9-4F8A-9A70-3C864AC30FD4-htm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Action<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/search-result\/caas\/CloudHelp\/cloudhelp\/2016\/ENU\/AutoCAD-Customization\/files\/GUID-96AEAE32-CDA9-4F8A-9A70-3C864AC30FD4-htm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Recorder<\/a> to create two macros that do the same thing. Name them something short and sweet like TON and TOF. You don\u2019t even have to go to the Action Recorder to run them, just type them in! Bada-bing. Instant control of your ToolTip visibility!<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"but-wait-theres-more\">But Wait! There\u2019s More!<\/h2>\n<p>Today\u2019s tip focused on regular ToolTips. I touched on rollover ToolTips and mentioned that you can turn them on or off via the Options dialog, but there\u2019s so much more you can do with them.
