It involves the AutoCAD Flatshot command, which I use to quickly produce accurate and complete 2D manufacturing drawings time after time. More details below, but, in a nutshell: I just pick the view of a part that will be visible when it\u2019s mounted to a panel, then execute the Flatshot command. I uncheck the obscure line option and, presto-change-o, I now have a printable view of the part I need to place into the manufacturing drawing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/autocad-flatshot-command-lt-vs-autocad_01_xck8rk.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5346\" data-lbwps-width=\"790\" data-lbwps-height=\"790\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/autocad-flatshot-command-lt-vs-autocad_01_xck8rk-300x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5346 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/autocad-flatshot-command-lt-vs-autocad_01_xck8rk.jpg\" alt=\"AutoCAD part #1. We actually place the device into a CAD drawing of the cabinet, to scale, print the drawing onto a Mylar sheet, and then paste that onto a metal panel in which we\u2019ll install the parts. Most of the panel pieces are available in a 3D STEP file, and the parts must match up perfectly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/autocad-flatshot-command-lt-vs-autocad_02_mg9trv.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5349\" data-lbwps-width=\"790\" data-lbwps-height=\"790\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/autocad-flatshot-command-lt-vs-autocad_02_mg9trv-300x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5349 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/autocad-flatshot-command-lt-vs-autocad_02_mg9trv.jpg\" alt=\"AutoCAD part #2. I use it to create accurate 2D representations of the 3D STEP parts. Then I can match the pieces to the full-size printout exactly, and mount them directly on top of the printed image. This enables our engineers to dictate how each headend will appear, 100 percent of the time, ensuring we get the standardized look we want for all our installations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/autocad-flatshot-command-lt-vs-autocad_03_asu5mx.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5352\" data-lbwps-width=\"790\" data-lbwps-height=\"790\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/autocad-flatshot-command-lt-vs-autocad_03_asu5mx-300x300.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5352 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/autocad-flatshot-command-lt-vs-autocad_03_asu5mx.jpg\" alt=\"AutoCAD part #3. You\u2019re basically limited to tracing the object the best you can in a paper space layout, using a polyline to get a 2D drawing of the 3D object. You\u2019d be better off having the actual part on your desk, then using a micrometer to digitize a flat image of the piece.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been at the drafting end of this, and it\u2019s not pretty. Trust me.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"now-what\">Now what?<\/h2>\n<p>My advice: First, see if your company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/subscription\">subscribes to AutoCAD<\/a>. New multi-user licensing means your CAD manager or IT support staff may be able grant you access just by <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/customer-service\/account-management\/subscription-management\/users-permissions\/add-remove\">following a few simple steps<\/a>. If not, your next best option is to make the case for an AutoCAD subscription. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.autodesk.com\/products\/autocad\/free-trial\">Download the free AutoCAD trial<\/a>, work with the Flatshot command, then share the results\u2014and time savings\u2014with your boss. Be sure to let it slip that in 30 days you\u2019re going back to your limited, 2D ways.<\/p>\n<p>Note: You can use Flatshot for a lot more than this 2D view application. For example, you can use it to generate a 2D picture of an isometric view of any 3D part.
