Here are a few ways to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/spring-cleaning-autocad-tuesday-tips-frank\/\" target=\"_blank\">clean up<\/a> an AutoCAD drawing quickly thanks to the Purge, Overkill, and Audit commands within AutoCAD. (And be sure to check out the video at the end of the article for a live demonstration!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"purge-command\">PURGE Command<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s get started and take a look at the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/support\/autocad-lt\/learn-explore\/caas\/CloudHelp\/cloudhelp\/2019\/ENU\/AutoCAD-LT\/files\/GUID-D68BA47B-A79D-4F58-9715-0569CC24BCEF-htm.html\" target=\"_blank\">PURGE<\/a> command in AutoCAD, possibly the best and typically the first line of defense when needing to clean up a crowded or cluttered drawing quickly. The Purge command will allow you to choose and then remove unused objects, layers, blocks, styles, and more from a drawing, leaving a cleaner and typically smaller drawing file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Purge dialog box allows us to see which objects, blocks, etc. can be purged along with a few more options, including purging nested items and automatically purging orphaned data.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/dnngwl1yi\/image\/upload\/v1588108445\/NUMBER1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"556\" height=\"767\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/NUMBER1.jpg\" alt=\"PURGE command AutoCAD\" class=\"wp-image-10385\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/NUMBER1.jpg 556w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/NUMBER1-217x300.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 556px) 100vw, 556px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Items can be purged individually by right-clicking on the object in the list and choosing purge. To quickly clean out a drawing, simply choose the Purge All option to remove every item available to purge in one click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Here, you can see the Purge All option was used and we can see the list of objects has been cleaned up instantly.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/dnngwl1yi\/image\/upload\/v1588108589\/NUMBER2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"555\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/NUMBER2.jpg\" alt=\"purge all AutoCAD\" class=\"wp-image-10386\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/NUMBER2.jpg 555w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/NUMBER2-217x300.jpg 217w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 555px) 100vw, 555px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"overkill-command\">OVERKILL Command<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Next up on our path to a clean drawing is the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/support\/autocad-lt\/learn-explore\/caas\/CloudHelp\/cloudhelp\/2019\/ENU\/AutoCAD-LT\/files\/GUID-44B9ECFC-752C-4CC5-9DA3-84DBF3B17CA6-htm.html\" target=\"_blank\">OVERKILL<\/a> command. Overkill is an often underused and occasionally unknown command that can really help out a drawing that has become bloated and unorganized. Overkill allows you to quickly remove multiple overlapping objects and combines those that are partially overlapping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>This dialog box will come up after selecting objects to clean up with the Overkill command. (Use the ALL command to select everything in your drawing, though it could be slow in larger files.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/dnngwl1yi\/image\/upload\/v1588108791\/NUMBER3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"442\" height=\"517\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/NUMBER3.jpg\" alt=\"OVERKILL command AutoCAD\" class=\"wp-image-10387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/NUMBER3.jpg 442w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/NUMBER3-256x300.jpg 256w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 442px) 100vw, 442px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In the dialog box we have the ability to filter which duplicate objects will be deleted and the criteria for which they will be selected. After settling on your options or leaving the dialog as is, select OK to finish the command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>In this example, 19 duplicate objects were removed from the drawing, allowing us to quickly clean it up and potentially saving some file size as well.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/res.cloudinary.com\/dnngwl1yi\/image\/upload\/v1588108914\/NUMBER4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"547\" height=\"94\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/NUMBER4.jpg\" alt=\"OVERKILL Command AutoCAD\" class=\"wp-image-10388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/NUMBER4.jpg 547w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/NUMBER4-300x52.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 547px) 100vw, 547px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"audit-command\">AUDIT Command<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The final command we are going to look at today is a simple (but useful) tool when it comes to drawing clean up. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/support\/autocad\/learn-explore\/caas\/CloudHelp\/cloudhelp\/2020\/ENU\/AutoCAD-Core\/files\/GUID-62DDB935-61B1-49DA-8238-3EF1CC45259B-htm.html\" target=\"_blank\">AUDIT<\/a> is a pretty common command when it comes to drawing clean up and general file health. It will automatically go through a drawing to find and fix most errors that it comes across.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One lesser known tip is that by setting the AUDITCTL variable to 1, a text file will be created once the command is finished with the .ADT file extension.
