Insert Xrefs in AutoCAD: Tuesday Tips with Brandon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As I\u2019ve shown in previous <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Tuesday Tips (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/author\/cadintentions\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tuesday Tips<\/a> articles, I like to share tips that bring attention to lesser known commands as well as clarity or real-life examples to actions that can be a little confusing to AutoCAD users. With that in mind, I wanted to do a quick refresher on inserting versus binding <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Xrefs (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/support\/autocad\/learn-explore\/caas\/simplecontent\/content\/work-xrefs-autocad.html\" target=\"_blank\">xrefs<\/a> in AutoCAD, highlighting the differences and use case for each option. (And there&#8217;s a full video below, too!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Over the years I\u2019ve been asked a number of times which option is best when inserting an xref into a drawing and there really isn\u2019t one definitive answer. The insert and bind commands, while very similar, each have a few pros and cons depending on the situation and mostly the makeup of the CAD drawing being inserted.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/bind-vs-insert-xrefs-NUMBER1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-lbwps-width=\"610\" data-lbwps-height=\"288\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/bind-vs-insert-xrefs-NUMBER1-300x142.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"288\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/bind-vs-insert-xrefs-NUMBER1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/bind-vs-insert-xrefs-NUMBER1.jpg 610w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/bind-vs-insert-xrefs-NUMBER1-300x142.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"insert-vs-bind-xref-in-autocad\"><strong>Insert vs. Bind Xref in AutoCAD<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To begin I wanted to share the definition of each option as <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/support\/autocad\/learn-explore\/caas\/CloudHelp\/cloudhelp\/2020\/ENU\/AutoCAD-Core\/files\/GUID-5BF89799-D496-4AAD-8773-9D4BF9B9E8CD-htm.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"explained on AKN (opens in a new tab)\">explained on AKN<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bind Xrefs: &#8220;Bind converts the objects in the xref into a block reference. Named object definitions are added to the current drawing with a prefix of blockname $n$, where n is a number starting at 0.&#8221;<\/li><li>Insert Xrefs: &#8220;Insert also converts the objects in the xref into a block reference. Named object definitions are merged into the current drawing without adding prefixes.&#8221;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After reviewing the definitions of each command, we can come to the conclusion that the main difference and deciding factor when choosing between Insert and Bind is whether you want the layers\/object definitions contained within the xref to be kept separate from your existing drawing or simply combined\/merged with your drawing when inserted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-bind-an-xref-in-autocad\">How to Bind an Xref in AutoCAD<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a look at an example for Bind.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>In this image, we have an xref (floor plan on the left). It has objects on a layer named text and in the xref the text layer has an assigned color of red and a lineweight of 0.25. In our current drawing though, we also have a floor plan with a layer named text where the assigned color is black and lineweight is default (floor plan on the right).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/bind-vs-insert-xrefs-NUMBER3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-lbwps-width=\"974\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>When we go to Bind\/Insert the xref into the current drawing (right-click on the xref in the external references manager and choose Bind), we have the choice between Bind and Insert, as seen in the image.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/bind-vs-insert-xrefs-NUMBER4.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-lbwps-width=\"1486\" data-lbwps-height=\"582\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/bind-vs-insert-xrefs-NUMBER4-300x117.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/bind-vs-insert-xrefs-NUMBER4-1024x401.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/bind-vs-insert-xrefs-NUMBER4-768x301.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1486px) 100vw, 1486px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If we choose to bind the xref, each layer\/object will be brought into our current drawing with a prefix added in the format of blockname $n$  allowing each object (like Text) to maintain its properties regardless  of any duplicates in the combined drawing.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>As you can see in this example, the bind command was used to insert the xref, automatically adding new layers in the drawing and keeping the text as red.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/05\/bind-vs-insert-xrefs-NUMBER5.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-lbwps-width=\"993\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-insert-an-xref-in-autocad\">How to Insert an Xref in AutoCAD<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, let\u2019s look at the results when Insert is chosen instead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this case, all of the object from the xref are once again brought into the current drawing. This time, however, any objects, layers, blocks, etc. that were already in the current drawing have now been merged with the existing versions.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>In the example here, the Text layer\u2014since it already existed\u2014has now simply had the xref text added to it and the text has changed to the current drawing properties (i.e., Black.)
