This streamlined approach is far superior to plotting individual drawings, especially when there are many files to plot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are multiple ways to initiate the command, and all but one will display the main Publish dialog, which we\u2019ll later explore in depth. Let&#8217;s explore how to publish in AutoCAD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, you can always type PUBLISH in the command line. From the interface, you can find it listed as Batch Plot in the extra commands pull down of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/basic-autocad-customization-quick-access-toolbar-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Quick Access Toolbar (opens in a new tab)\">Quick Access Toolbar<\/a>. Don\u2019t be confused\u2026Batch Plot and Publish mean the same thing, much like the AutoCAD synonyms Plot and Print.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>You can also access the command by right clicking on a layout tab. Manually select the tabs you want in advance, or, prior to clicking on Publish Selected Layouts, you can click on Select All Layouts. Perhaps you prefer to access the command from the Application Menu. It\u2019s there too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_2_ay6dtw.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-lbwps-width=\"624\" data-lbwps-height=\"387\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_2_ay6dtw-300x186.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"387\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_2_ay6dtw.jpg\" alt=\"Application Menu AutoCAD\" class=\"wp-image-10063\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_2_ay6dtw.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_2_ay6dtw-300x186.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, if you\u2019re a Sheet Set user, you can Publish the entire set, a subset, or any group of selected drawings by right clicking and choosing any of the included electronic types, or you can select from a list of Page Setups that are stored with the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Sheet Set Manager (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/support\/autocad\/learn-explore\/caas\/CloudHelp\/cloudhelp\/2020\/ENU\/AutoCAD-Core\/files\/GUID-9751A902-27DC-4BCD-8D3D-585478B213DD-htm.html\" target=\"_blank\">Sheet Set Manager<\/a>. Notice also that there is an option to display the Publish dialog if you desire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Publishing via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/sheet-set-manager-tips-tuesday-tips-seth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Sheet Set Manager (opens in a new tab)\">Sheet Set Manager<\/a> is my preferred method, as it is the only one that doesn\u2019t display the Publish dialog, and it is also most likely controlled by a CAD manager at the beginning of the project, ensuring proper standards throughout the set. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_3_rm0yr0.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-lbwps-width=\"351\" data-lbwps-height=\"304\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_3_rm0yr0-300x260.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"351\" height=\"304\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_3_rm0yr0.jpg\" alt=\"Sheet Set Manager publish AutoCAD\" class=\"wp-image-10064\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_3_rm0yr0.jpg 351w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_3_rm0yr0-300x260.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-publish-dialog\">The PUBLISH Dialog<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where the Publish command loses some people, as the default settings in the dialog often create confusion, and operating it is not always intuitive. For these reasons, I see some users avoid publishing, as they simply don\u2019t understand it. Let\u2019s look at two of the defaults that tend to create the most confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The first time the <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/support\/autocad\/learn-explore\/caas\/CloudHelp\/cloudhelp\/2020\/ENU\/AutoCAD-Core\/files\/GUID-7BCCDFDC-562F-43A4-83F2-CEAE10C0DA64-htm.html?st=publish%20dialog\">Publish dialog<\/a> appears, the <em>Sheets list<\/em> box will be populated with both the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Model Space (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.autodesk.com\/support\/autocad\/learn-explore\/caas\/CloudHelp\/cloudhelp\/2019\/ENU\/AutoCAD-Core\/files\/GUID-990538B6-DDA1-4190-BCC0-BB5BA94C9879-htm.html\" target=\"_blank\">Model Space<\/a> and any <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Layouts (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/layouts-exploring-features-benefits-autocad\/\" target=\"_blank\">Layouts<\/a> from all drawings that are open. Even unsaved, blank drawings (Drawing 1, etc.). This is because the \u201c<em>Automatically load all open drawings<\/em>\u201d option is checked. This may not match your workflow, so feel free to uncheck it if you want to work differently.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_4_qzezeq.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-lbwps-width=\"624\" data-lbwps-height=\"534\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_4_qzezeq-300x257.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"534\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_4_qzezeq.jpg\" alt=\"Publish dialog AutoCAD\" class=\"wp-image-10066\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_4_qzezeq.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_4_qzezeq-300x257.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Also, you probably want either Model Space or (most likely) Layouts, but not both. Controlling this is easy, but you need to know how, as it\u2019s not obvious. The secret is to right click within the <em>Sheets list<\/em> box that contains your sheet names. Doing so will reveal a contextual pop-up menu. Notice that by default, both Model Space and Layouts are checked. Uncheck the one you don\u2019t want. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_5_wgswb7.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" data-lbwps-width=\"220\" data-lbwps-height=\"231\" data-lbwps-srcsmall=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_5_wgswb7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"220\" height=\"231\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autodesk.com/blogs\/autocad\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/35\/2020\/04\/Publish_5_wgswb7.jpg\" alt=\"Publish Dialog AutoCAD\" class=\"wp-image-10068\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you have\nset <em>Automatically load open drawings<\/em>, and suppressed Model Space or\nLayouts, the dialog will make more sense. But there\u2019s one more step to success.\nThose settings (and any others) won\u2019t be remembered until you click on the\nPublish button. Don\u2019t make the mistake of closing the dialog to start over thinking\nthat your preferences are set. You\u2019ll be disappointed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, I typically publish a temporary PDF or DWF just to let it finish in order to \u201csave\u201d these settings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In part two of the series, we will take a deeper dive into the Dialog.
