Hybrid Manufacture For All: How Emerging Tech Is Reducing Barriers To Entry

Directed Energy Deposition (DED) is an emerging metal Additive Manufacturing technology, enabling advances in product sustainability, performance, and lead time. Previously, high barriers to entry in this technology have included the high cost of machines and the high level of skill required to operate them.
Recently, several more accessible machines have come to market, such as desktop DED machines, and retrofitted CNC machines. These, along with advances in CAM software provided by Fusion 360 have made hybrid manufacturing a viable alternative to traditional manufacturing methods for a wider range of users. This talk will showcase the latest advances in DED hardware and discuss how hurdles can also be reduced in software, people, and processes, driving wider technology adoption down the supply chain.
