0 Carbon: Precise Carbon Footprint Calculation and Optimization Using Intelligent Model and Carbon Database for Sustainable Construction
Our clients’ specifications are more and more demanding, as governments ask for architecture, engineering, and construction industries to improve their carbon footprints and reduce energy consumption. In France, we need to reach “Carbon Neutrality” by 2050, and this can only be done if major construction companies like VINCI Construction decide to use powerful tools to optimize their projects. Using web applications like Time To Beem, we’ve managed to successfully reach our French clients’ specifications. We’ve also achieved a 50% time savings on our sustainable development engineering. These platforms allow us to upload an intelligent model and quickly assign a carbon footprint to all objects. By extracting quantities and the carbon footprint, we can then have the effect of each discipline and precisely decide on how to make more efforts. Theoretically, we should be able to build a very large database to train artificial intelligence (AI) models and create better and better designs!

Total Carbon Data, Analysis, and Insights
Buildings and construction generate nearly 40% of annual global CO2 emissions. Of that 40%, building operations account for 28%, while building materials and construction (a.k.a., embodied carbon emissions) are responsible for 11%. Achieving zero emissions in operations requires a continued focus on energy efficiency, avoidance of the use of fossil fuels, and use of renewable energy systems. Unlike operational carbon emissions, which occur throughout the life of a building, embodied carbon emissions occur “up front” and so play a bigger role in the global carbon budget in the more immediate future. As such, it is more imperative than ever that architects and other project stakeholders start to employ total carbon analysis at all stages of every project. In this session, you’ll join Autodesk Product Development and Impact team members to learn about new data, analysis, and insights into total carbon to help make effective reductions as part of a more integrated, building information modeling (BIM)-based design process.

Materials Intelligence for Low-Carbon Design: Supercharge a Project's Carbon Footprint Calculation in Civil 3D
The infrastructure design industry has long struggled to minimize environmental impact. Traditional processes cause inefficiencies, hindering early-stage sustainability prioritization. ORIS and Sweco solved this by embedding ORIS's carbon assessment and emissions modeling capabilities into Autodesk Civil 3D software. ORIS's certified calculator streamlines processes, providing comprehensive impact assessments and quantifying embodied carbon emissions for road designs. The innovative plug-in connects drawings to local material sites in ORIS, empowering whole-lifecycle carbon assessments with visualized supply chains. It automates geolocated project generation linked to ORIS's database, identifies quantities per 3D object for bills of materials, and generates accurate carbon footprints based on required materials. Designers can make informed sustainable-sourcing decisions, reducing emissions while promoting local solutions and recycling. This integration solves long-standing sustainability challenges.

Found in Translation: Industry Alignment of Practices to Translate BIM to Carbon

The global movement of decarbonization in buildings is growing. Yet the industry is characterized by a multitude of standards and diverse BIM and carbon accounting processes used for assessing embodied carbon. Under the guidance of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Autodesk and six leading architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) companies—AECOM, Arcadis, Arup, Foster + Partners, Ramboll, and SOM—collaborated to demonstrate these discrepancies on a case study that revealed a 34% variation in the firms' approaches to embodied carbon assessment using the same Revit model. Join our panel discussion to unpack the reasons behind this disparity, explore the complexities of translating BIM data into carbon insights, and propose guidelines to consider when undertaking an embodied carbon assessment. This technical discourse will identify opportunities for alignment and transparency within the industry, promoting actionable carbon assessments driven by BIM to support decarbonization efforts.

Integrating Embodied Carbon Feedback in Early Stage Design Using Dynamo and Insight 360
How “green” is your green building? This session intends to answer this fundamental question and to reveal the “real” carbon impacts of various design decisions on early stage building design. Annually, embodied carbon is responsible for 11% of global greenhouse gas emissions and 28% of global building sector emissions. Currently, architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) firms mostly focus on reducing operational emissions without much regard for embodied emissions. This talk will focus on the importance of quantifying the impact of material selection at early stage design on EC, and to integrate the results with Insight 360 software. We’ll illustrate the fundamentals of EE and EC, and we’ll demonstrate through case studies how Dynamo workflows and various carbon databases can be used to provide a visual, high-level carbon feedback to the designer. The intention of this talk is to empower the designers to make better carbon-informed decisions without compromising energy performance for their Architecture 2030 projects.

BamCore Showcases Its Carbon Impacts Via Autodesk Ecosystem
Microdesk Co-Innovation Lab collaborated with BamCore through the Autodesk Foundation to show the value and benefits of their products to industry clients. Using the Autodesk-provided design analysis ecosystem, we showcase the energy and carbon advantages that BamCore’s products can bring to the design. The developed custom workflow allows BamCore to rapidly obtain comparative energy and carbon impacts and present them to their clients without future support. We’ve also set up the groundwork and created a phased journey to navigate the Future of Work, aiming to include an interactive user interface dashboard for rapid ROI analysis. We compare BamCore technology versus typical constructions to ensure Microdesk and BamCore co-create meaningful and inspirational future impacts toward resilient and low-carbon buildings.

Design for Zero Carbon: Decarbonizing the Revit House Together
Discover decarbonization design strategies for building design, as well as a data-informed workflow for implementing these strategies to decarbonize the training Revit House. We’ll use Revit software, the Revit One Click plug-in, and One Click LCA to show you how to extract and manage quantitative and material data to measure the embodied carbon emissions associated with the design of the Revit House. After examining the results, and discovering the carbon hotspots, we’ll decide on appropriate decarbonization strategies, aiming for a 40% reduction in line with the World Green Building Council goal. We’ll then apply those strategies to the Revit House. Integration between Revit and One Click LCA has streamlined the data-informed workflow and provides carbon data when the designer needs it. The designer can use this data to make design decisions and subsequently deliver measurably lower carbon buildings.

A Holistic, Faster Approach to Low-Carbon Design
Discover how Mott MacDonald is driving low-carbon change across infrastructure sectors through the holistic use of Autodesk products. Carbon Reduction Revolution in Japan by Unlocking Data Capability

Since 2022, Daiwa House strives for “Digital Daiwa House,” enabling business-wide productivity and unlocking business value creation and innovation. As a part of our digital strategy, we worked on standardizing/structuring data to reach higher data maturity. It enables us to improve the lifecycle value of buildings. In this session, we will explain the evolution of data-driven design with a systemic approach to meet our Sustainable Design goals and support carbon neutrality. The reduction of CO2 emissions in individual properties is critical to meet our objective: to evaluate all building designs by standardized/structured data models and methodologies. To achieve the goal, we developed ICT (Integrated Carbon Tool) with Autodesk Consulting, which allows individual designers to make decisions based on embodied carbon indicators. Through this journey, we identify more opportunities with the data strategy, data integrations, and industry-wide ecosystem to further increase business value.

Sustainable Infrastructure: How to Monitor Carbon Emissions of Infrastructure Projects Across Multiple Teams Globally
A large international engineering firm sought a systemic and consistent approach to Sustainable Design within its infrastructure projects. The firm partnered with ORIS to achieve accurate and comparable carbon footprint assessments across diverse projects. The firm aimed to achieve global monitoring of the CO2 footprint of their designs, necessitating a robust and reliable solution for carbon emission evaluation. ORIS rollout involved creating a structured process and data approach to integrate their existing workflows. Using Autodesk Platform Services, ORIS automated the extraction of data from intelligent models, which reduced pain and errors. The process enabled the infrastructure team to spread the solution efficiently across geographies (Denmark, the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Finland) and departments (road, bridges, tunnel, railway, and so on). This session will highlight key benefits, such as time spent delivering CO2 assessment of the project, measurement consistency, delivered carbon reduction, and carbon dashboarding.

Partnering with Stantec to Develop AI-Based Total Carbon Analyses
Decisions made in the earliest stages of design have the most impact on a building's carbon footprint. Similarly, decisions made in the earliest stages of software development have outsized effects on its usability and adoption. Yet, carbon experts are generally brought into the design process too late to influence a building's form and primary materials. And analysis tools usually target these experts, rather than the designers working in the early phase. Likewise, the software users are often brought in when it's too late to change the fundamental workflows the software is built around. In this talk, representatives from Forma and Stantec will cover how they've used their partnership to develop tools for all designers to bring carbon-focused design to the conceptual phase. They'll showcase discovery work, prototype testing, and, in the end, their plan for enabling sustainability-centered outcome-based design.

From Concept to Carbon: Early Design Insights with AI and Autodesk Forma
This case study will showcase Autodesk Forma software's new AI-based embodied carbon analysis, built in collaboration with EHDD, examining real-life use cases by Stantec practitioners to evaluate embodied carbon at the earliest stages of design. First, we'll expand on our AU 2023 product demo, exploring Stantec's partnership with Forma, and establishing the user needs and guiding principles that led us to the in-market embodied carbon analysis. Then, Jack Rusk, who leads the EHDD team behind the C.Scale engine that powers the analysis in Forma, will explain how these same user needs manifested in the computational back end, giving a look behind the curtain at the AI model. Finally, and most importantly, Stantec practitioners will show real projects where they've used the analysis to inform effective early-stage decisions. Specifically, these Forma users will demonstrate that democratized carbon solutions empower any designer to champion sustainable, outcome-based design from step one.
