This class takes you through an example workflow for a road and highway design project using Infrastructure Design Suite Ultimate 2014 software. We start with InfraWorks™ software for the conceptual and preliminary design phases. InfraWorks 360™ is used to perform vertical optimization of the road design. Then it is moved into AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software for the detailed design and construction documentation phases. Next, we take the design into Navisworks® Manage software to perform clash detections and validate the design components coming from Revit® Structure software and Civil 3D. Finally, the design goes back into InfraWorks and into 3ds Max® Design software to perform visual communication about the design to key stakeholders. Various types of analysis is performed along the way to validate the design and ensure design parameters are being met.

This class will start by explaining what computational design is then introduce Dynamo, its user interface, scripts and some of its useful applications. We will see how it integrates with Autodesk Civil 3D and where we can leverage it the most with examples from roads and highways, rail and land development. Finally, we will share a list of resources where attendees can resort to when they want to learn more about the software and create their own scripts.

Autodesk Civil 3D is a great tool for infrastructure works like roads, pipelines also for modeling linear structures (bridge, tunnel, retaining wall), and Autodesk Revit is good for parametrical modeling. This class covers the use of Autodesk Revit together with Dynamo and CivilConnection package to leverage the power of Civil 3D inside Revit to automate the process of placement of universal TBM ring along alignment while minimizing the deviation in the placement of TBM ring along the alignment. In this class, I will demonstrate the parametrical modeling of universal ring and placement and updating parameters (e.g. rotation of ring) of the ring along alignment using Dynamo.

The recent joint Autodesk/RICS paper “Future of Work in Construction” calls on industry, government, and academia to join forces to help ensure the adoption of industrialized construction (IC) for transformational change in our industry. Each stakeholder—academia, the private sector, and the government—has a part to play in this shift of thinking, behaviors, and processes in order to facilitate change. The future of the industry is highly dependent on the competence of graduates entering the workforce. In the face of troubling skilled-labor shortages, new employees must enter the industry with the abilities and exposure to technologies to drive digital construction, the IC processes, and higher levels of precision in construction. You see some of the most common corridor mistakes and learn how to fix them, learn some more advanced corridor troubleshooting, find out how to choose the correct subassembly for the job (even if it's not obvious), and learn what to do if the correct subassembly doesn't exist.

Ever model Revit elements on site topography and can't quite get them to follow the exact contours? This class shows you how. Get step-by-step instructions on how to build straight walls, curved walls, sidewalks, curbs, stairs, planters, roads, and other hardscape elements of any shape or size that follow the exact shape and contour of any site topography element. Conversely, this class also teaches you how to model site topography to match the location and shape of hardscape elements. No third-party programs, API programming, or other programs other than Revit are used in this class. This class first introduces fundamental concepts that will become the foundation for which all the element modeling will be created from. This class also shows how to work with those stubborn site topographies to get them to do what you need.

Wales, Alaska, is the most westerly inhabited village in North America. Having easy access to the site is not feasible if you should happen to forget what it looks like—not to mention that it’s covered in snow for 75% of the year. So let’s build a road over 10 miles of permafrost with the use of 12,000 acres of LiDAR (light detection and ranging) data. Using InfraWorks 360 software, we’ll work in 4D and adjust the road location over the permafrost. Then we’ll use InfraWorks 360 Hydrology to determine the watersheds and culvert locations, and size them for us. This session features InfraWorks 360 and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
