Many struggle scaling the adoption and usage of Dynamo for automation within their organisation. This presentation will describe the steps and workflows that GHD went through in implementing Dynamo at an enterprise level. It will explore how to best manage Dynamo graphs, nodes, and custom source code. It will discuss the people aspect of implementing automation workflows and the different training initiatives that were developed to assist users in upskilling to visual programming. It will also explore ways to best change the mindset of engineers and modelers to adopt data-driven workflows.The presentation will also step through a 3-stage Urban Planning initiative where GHD changed a manual, disconnected, error-prone, time-consuming process to an data-driven, automated, and accurate workflow. It will explore the why, what, and the outcomes of these initiatives, and end with a look into a generative design example which GHD partnered with Autodesk's "The Living" for a large, urban planning competition.

In this session we’ll take a look at the new Grading Optimization extension in Civil 3D 2022 software, and its success in dealing with residential land development projects. Throughout the course of development, engineers and contractors typically face questions and concerns regarding earthwork quantities. How much cut? How much fill? How do we grade each individual lot? Those answers and many more are crucial to a successful land development project. With the Grading Optimization extension, we can quickly apply certain design criteria that will help us further evaluate the best solution for our project. Join us for this session as we take a project and run it through the ringer with the Civil 3D Grading Optimization tools.

Autodesk Research’s in-house architectural studio, The Living, is a pioneer in the application of generative-design technology. They have completed successful projects for Airbus—the famous bionic partition for the A320—and internal to Autodesk, including both the design of the new office in Toronto’s MaRS Discovery District and the exhibit hall layout for last year’s Autodesk University. In late 2016, The Living was approached by Van Wijnen, an innovative Dutch construction company interested in reinventing the way the firm built homes. Van Wijnen wanted to apply generative design at the urban scale, exploring possibilities around the layout of residential areas based on financial, sociological, or environmental metrics. Speakers from Autodesk Research will present the concept behind the project and details of the Dynamo-based tool that Van Wijnen uses for new layouts. Additionally, a speaker from Van Wijnen will talk about how the tool is used and has changed the way the firm approaches urban planning projects.

Attendees of this discussion will learn how others perform similar tasks during the day-to-day operations of consulting engineering and surveying companies. There is always another way, and perhaps the way someone else is doing it is better or more efficient than your way. The outline of this discussion will range from using Infrastructure Design Suite software for conceptual planning efforts to organizing your layers and detailed design efforts. Topics will include how we create our basemaps from scratch, how we separate our manual linework from AutoCAD Civil 3D software-generated linework, how we handle grading efforts, and how we bring it all together for plan production.

There's a misconception that AutoCAD Civil 3D software is not very good at using large point-cloud data sets. This class will squash these rumors and open eyes to the actual ease. This class will cover the use of AutoCAD Civil 3D with Leica's CloudWorx add-on. We'll examine the ease of navigating through the different point-cloud data sets inside the AutoCAD Civil 3D environment. We'll touch on ways to verify accuracies of previous tradition surveys, and we'll examine newer collections procedures like terrestrial LIDAR and unmanned autonomous systems (UAS) point clouds. We'll show you several examples of projects with complex existing conditions that created hurdles in design. We'll show how these hurdles can be overcome by using simple add-on tools like CloudWorx.

In this hands-on lab, you’ll learn how to generate parking lots, sweep vehicles around a site, and create a roundabout junction corridor. Step by step, you’ll learn how to choose a parking-lot style that is right for your site. Select the appropriate vehicle to check for turning movements and height clearances. Create a roundabout junction corridor to add to an existing AutoCAD Civil 3D software road corridor. You’ll also generate reports and customize the settings and standards for a specific project.

This class is designed to articulate the workflow of creating a topographic survey model within AutoCAD Civil 3D software by using scanner-generated point clouds (Trimble SX10) processed within InfraWorks software. Initially, we will import our point cloud into InfraWorks where it will be analyzed, processed, and filtered. We will then export data from InfraWorks and import it within AutoCAD Civil 3D for additional processing. Once in AutoCAD Civil 3D, we will process data again to create a topographic survey model. To demonstrate this workflow, we'll focus on an actual project containing a retaining wall (75 feet long x 20 feet high) in need of replacement. In this instance, our team decided to supplement a traditional (total station) topographic survey with scanner-generated point clouds to save on field time, and also to promote the safety of our survey crew.

The old days of tissue paper seemed to have died with Civil 3D software, or have they? The mentality and methods used to grade are often using the computer as a sketch tool. We will look at how to use Civil 3D software to provide us with information and grade our site and subdivision efficiently and with a well-defined model. We will learn about feature lines, grading groups, grading objects, corridors, and surface editing.

This extremely dynamic, feature-filled class will help you to evaluate in context, analyze, and communicate your highly detailed land development site projects using InfraWorks and Civil 3D. We will use real-world projects with InfraWorks 360 and Civil 3D models at the 30%, 60%, 90%, and 100% design stages for quality design checks and public involvement reviews. More specifically, we will bring these sites to life with buildings, ponds, ADA access, accurate parking stripes, and pavement markings. Next, we'll demonstrate how to add more depth by randomizing the vehicles and vegetation with Java script that you can tailor to your own requirements. We'll also uncover the secrets of when to use IMX, DAE, SDF, and others file formats to greatly increase your productivity and improve file management. Lastly, we'll place everything on a storyboard to produce a striking client video. This class will be packed full of information, so hold on to your site. Hope to see you there.

Ugly. That's the only way to describe the default AutoCAD Civil 3D corridors. Or, you could say a crazy Technicolor spider drew them. Either way, they don't look like roads. Most AutoCAD Civil 3D users simply switch between the various default Code Set Styles and then turn off the layers they don't want. In this class, we'll learn how to create and apply link, point, and shape styles to a corridor. This will let us shade the pavement, hatch the sidewalk, and show grass in the grading, while at the same time hiding those unsightly projection lines. Additionally, we'll take a look at how the Code Set Styles control the labels applied to corridor cross sections, and even how to use expressions to display only the information we need, while hiding what we don't want (such as the vertical grade of a curb face).

We will explore the underutilized, not so well known, and very powerful subassemblies included with AutoCAD Civil 3D 2016 software. First we must understand that there is nothing generic about Generic Subassemblies; these powerful tools can link our concepts to our finished design. Next we will consider multiple scenarios—if the design is to be complete, then we will provide some conditions for success, using Horizontal and Vertical Conditional Subassemblies to create complex corridors while limiting the amount of overall assemblies and providing a better design.

This class will start by explaining what computational design is then introduce Dynamo, its user interface, scripts and some of its useful applications. We will see how it integrates with Autodesk Civil 3D and where we can leverage it the most with examples from roads and highways, rail and land development. Finally, we will share a list of resources where attendees can resort to when they want to learn more about the software and create their own scripts.

Arkio is a new collaborative design tool that enables designers to work together on buildings, interiors and urban plans using VR, AR, PCs, tablets and phones. In this session we will demonstrate Arkio live and show how it can be used to quickly sketch various design options on top of Revit and BIM 360 models and how the resulting designs can be exported back as native Revit geometry and families. During these live demos we will show examples of how Arkio is being used by architects, urban planners and educators. We will talk about how features like designing with parametric shapes, real-time program calculations, sun studies, sections and shared views are helping our users streamline their design process.

In this session, attendees will learn about the tools and workflows available inside InfraWorks for land development, and they'll discover how to implement those tools within a workflow including AutoCAD Civil 3D. Attendees will also learn that corridors aren't just for roads. We'll explore how beneficial corridors can be with grading projects in AutoCAD Civil 3D. From transitions to conditions, we'll examine the workflows that will help you take command with AutoCAD Civil 3D and InfraWorks.

GHD has developed a master planning solution for urban planning and large-scale master planning projects using InfraWorks and Civil 3D. The new workflows allow GHD to overcome several issues and include automatically linking geometry and attribute information and easily modifying building forms and layout of masterplans (both buildings and plots); real-time testing and option development with clients; automatically creating 3D models using the predefined attribute information in InfraWorks; automating the process to help the team reduce manual errors, improve efficiency, and focus on productive tasks such as working on design options instead of spending the time on manual data processing.

In this session, you’ll learn the details about how the integrations work and see examples of how they expand your and your company’s abilities related to winning and completing projects.

Modeling water distribution systems has always been a tedious process. AutoCAD Civil 3D offers tools that will greatly assist you with this process. For horizontal and vertical layouts, AutoCAD Civil 3D can model just about any situation you’ll run into. In this class, we see how to create a 3D model of a water distribution system, edit the system to account for those design changes, and analyze it for design errors. Note that this class does not get into hydraulic analysis.

This class will cover using feature lines to create a surface in Civil 3D software, including do’s and don’ts. The class will also cover tips on how to use the grading tool to create the feature lines you’ll need for grading. This type of grading is good for site plans and detail grading for walls, headwalls, ponds, ADA ramps, curbs, and ADA paths.
