After graduating from their respective university courses, BAC founders Neill and Ian Briggs set up their own design/engineering consultancy, with Neill leading engineering activities and Ian heading up the design elements. The company was commissioned to work on major automotive projects with the likes of Porsche, Mercedes, Smart, AMG, Maybach, Ford and Bentley, but they also gained valuable experience with smaller brands, too. Over time, Ian and Neill would identify a gap in the market that they believed simply had to be filled – a single-seater, road-legal vehicle that focuses purely on the person behind the wheel and is totally uncompromised. Ian, Design Director for BAC, will walk users through the automotive design workflows and share his experiences on how software from Autodesk and workstation technology from HP, AMD, and NVIDIA, contributes to the Briggs brother's ability to turn their vision into reality.

In this class, we’ll cover four topics of automotive manufacturing: mold simulation and CAM, factory planning, automated manufacturing, and emerging design and manufacturing technology. We’ll begin with the challenges that automotive tooling companies face, and how the use of new technology and increased machine utilization can address the needs of more-complex and accurate tooling. From there we’ll move to factory planning and ways in which to address the challenges that drive change in manufacturing facilities; the problems that arise because of change; and the use of a unified digital model to manage this. We’ll then look at how manufacturing productivity can be increased using intelligent automation, and how it can improve consistency and component reliability. And we’ll finish discussing the use of emerging technology like generative design and additive and hybrid manufacturing, as manufacturers look to improve performance and efficiency of vehicles to meet sustainability and regulatory requirements.

In the last few years , we’ve witnessed automotive design undergoing a sea change largely driven by two main factors – Climate change concerns and consumer behavior. Push for more greener vehicles fueled by technological advancements has created a new category for consumers which is redefining the traditional vehicle aesthetics. Similarly the forces linked to ever-changing consumer aspirations & behaviors largely driven by factors like rapid urbanization, rise in disposable incomes, digital & social awareness, unwarranted events like COVID pandemic & geopolitical tensions that are already impacting automotive design . The session will take a look at how certain disruptions in the traditional automotive design approaches have the potential to shape the future of mobility , challenge the conformist styling concepts and how Autodesk tools like Alias & VRED continue to stay relevant in this overall transition.

Generative design is a design method in which the output is generated by a set of rules or an algorithm. It is based on parametric modeling and it is a fast method of exploring design possibilities. Dynamo is a generative design application equipped with a user friendly interface based on Visual Programming. It’s a language which provides users ability to create geometry through scripts without any deep programming knowledge and experience. It allows designers and engineers to create geometry relationships based on rules and logic rather than traditional sculpting/push-pull manipulations and allows to generate geometry which normally would be very time consuming. This session will focus on some aspects of the generative design focused on detail modelling based on surfaces and geometry (complex and irregular 3d patterns, random geometry and fractal geometry) and show how these designs can be integrated into Alias and Alias SpeedForm models.

Different composite materials have been in used for many years in the automotive industry to create components that have unique characteristics, such as being strong and light. The trend in using composite materials is accelerating to meet lightweighting requirements to meet the next generation of fuel economy standards. An interesting lightweighting application combines the use of continuous fiber composite material with injection molding. The continuous fiber composite material forms a lightweight shell, while the necessary support structure can be created by overmolding it with a fiber-filled plastic. This so-called hybrid technique can create extremely lightweight strong parts that can be manufactured in large volumes. Autodesk® Simulation Moldflow® plastic injection molding simulation software can help with the design and engineering efforts for this process.

 Moldflow Insight software is used to develop automotive interior and exterior in China’s Chang’an Automobile Group, from the stage of engineering design to part's structure design then to mold design and molding condition optimize also include the trouble shooting after the first trial. Based on the comparison between the experiment and Moldflow Insight results, Chang’an successfully built an analysis standard and results judge standard. With the help of API, Chang’an created many programs to automatically do the model create, molding condition optimize, results judge, and so on. To meet the assessment criteria of GDT which was used on the part of motor, normally defined the tolerance of fit. Changan's analyst explore and studied a new way to simulate and examine the part's GDT by co-work with Moldflow Insight, Digimat, and Abaqus. This class will use many actual case to show these application, through that we can see the benefit of use right  Moldflow Insight application strategy in the development of automotive interior and exterior new part.

The purpose of this class is to present an end-to-end workflow for generative and lattice design in the Automotive and Aerospace industry, using software and technology from Autodesk, Inc. At this moment in time, Autodesk is the only technology innovator that offers this unique capability—using their advanced software technology—for design, simulation, generative design (topology, skin, and lattice optimization), build simulation, build preparation, and advanced manufacturing methods. The class will demonstrate step by step the process involved in taking a component through design, simulation, optimization, build preparation, build simulation, post-build verification, and finishing. The class will educate attendees who wish to learn about the processes and challenges involved in additive design, lost-PLA casting and manufacturing. The software being demonstrated for the workflow includes Fusion 360 and Netfabb. This class will also present some of the challenges and solutions for certification.

This class will provide an update on Alias SpeedForm (formerly known as Project Earl). This next-generation, sub-d concept modeler is currently under development by Autodesk, Inc., and it is targeted at servicing the needs of professional automotive designers and product stylists.

This class demonstrates the typical use of Maya in automotive concept modeling and shows how Maya is positioned in various design pipelines. Even as more of the automotive design process is going digital, clay models still remain a critical part of the design and validation of automotive design. Scanning these clay models and bringing them back into the computer to be retopologized in preparation for the Class-A modeling process has been a time-intensive process historically. New advancements in Alias AutoStudio software simplify this reverse-engineering workflow. In this class you will learn more about these developments and discover how to speed up the physical-to-digital process.

To archive the lightweight and optimization design for Automotive component, the advance material will be used, so the fiber orientation, the residual stress, weld line location and warpage are very important for the design improve, also the Co-Simulation (Moldflow Insight + Helius PFA + ABAQUS) is used to evaluate the strength and remove the weakness in potential. This will greatly reduce the demand for the high cost of physical prototype testing.

Alias has long been an industry standard modeling software used for automotive design. Autodesk is in the process of making a very significant investment into Alias, with enhancements to the user interface, new modeling paradigms, and the API.
