Enhancing Labor, Quality, and Prefabrication Through In-Wall Coordination

In-wall coordination is arguably one of the most complex workflows to manage throughout the whole lifecycle of a project build. But it doesn't have to be. There are many factors that go into designing and building the interiors of any project, and this can become even more complex in projects involving health care and life sciences. In the construction industry, it's not uncommon for the walls of a building to be coordinated by traditionally marking up construction documentation, or by field coordinating MEP rough-in. However, this approach can lead to a lot of RFIs and rework—and an overall quality reduction. Enhancing in-wall coordination through a virtual coordination process will not only improve the overall efficiency of your project build, it will also unlock many prefabrication opportunities for the general contractor and trade partners. Let's Hit the Road, Jack: A BIM Workflow for Roads and Highways

This class takes you through an example workflow for a road and highway design project using Infrastructure Design Suite Ultimate 2014 software. We start with InfraWorks™ software for the conceptual and preliminary design phases. InfraWorks 360™ is used to perform vertical optimization of the road design. Then it is moved into AutoCAD® Civil 3D® software for the detailed design and construction documentation phases. Next, we take the design into Navisworks® Manage software to perform clash detections and validate the design components coming from Revit® Structure software and Civil 3D. Finally, the design goes back into InfraWorks and into 3ds Max® Design software to perform visual communication about the design to key stakeholders. Various types of analysis is performed along the way to validate the design and ensure design parameters are being met.

The collection and management of building data, including the requirements for rooms, equipment, and other needs, as it evolves from early design through construction documentation and as a basis for facility management, can be enhanced through advanced techniques in Revit-based software. Providing the Best Value for Your Budget Case Study: Zoetis

One of the biggest challenges that the architecture, engineering, and construction industry faces is conveying the design intent in a manner that reduces constructability and rework complications at all handover stages of a project's lifecycle. This presentation will discuss how early contractor involvement and an integrated design and construction process can help to achieve design optimization through the use of virtual design and construction (VDC) tools like Building Information Modeling (BIM). On the Zoetis project the Construction Team was involved in the earliest stages of the project-performing task, including quantity analysis and cost trending, discipline constructability, and coordination review. Because the reviews happened by the time construction documentation was issued, the firm avoided the majority of the problems that normally occur during construction. Additionally, the Construction Team has seen a reduction of 50% of the normal schedule time for the coordination of the project. This has enabled the team to provide the client, Zoetis, with value for its budget.

Creating room data/layout sheets & manuals are getting easier with BIM

The accumulation and management of the building design data, including room requirements, medical equipment, and other room-based items, which starts from early design stages and keep changing until getting the construction documentation, can be enhanced through BIM techniques using Revit and Microsoft office tools, this ensures that all elements and information are coordinated and validated among all relevant disciplines. This includes a link to a central data source (MS Access), used to create a space program, create room datasheets, and specification manuals. Also extract design plans and 3D views as part of the BIM models. This session will cover the database used and explains the relationships between objects and associated rooms and will show some techniques in Revit and dynamo in a live demo. The session goes beyond learning Revit basics and looks at the underlying information requirements of emerging integration in project delivery highlighting innovative ideas and workflows.
