AutoCAD uses grips showed with a selected object not only to provide visual hints of the object—such as start/end/center points, or mid/tangent points or vertices—but also, more importantly, to provide shortcuts to various operations against the object, such as stretch, move, rotation, and scale. Other AutoCAD-based applications (Civil 3D software, AutoCAD Architecture software, AutoCAD MEP software, and so on) use custom grips with architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) entities extensively. Fortunately, with .NET API, we can add custom grips to an AutoCAD object for our own specialized operation against the selected object. This session will show you a few practical examples of using custom grips.

Large and complex projects often present large and complex problems that can last a lifetime if not properly managed. One of those problems can be establishing the appropriate geolocation of buildings on a site, or, in Revit-speak, "shared coordinates." As we explore two Bavarian-inspired destination towns that have been years in the making, and are worth billions of dollars in investment, time, and coordination, we’ll analyze how time can cause geographical data to shift and leave a place in space not where you thought it once was. Understand how this impacts existing built work and causes anticipated construction schedules to shift, and see how to reestablish shared coordinates in multiple platforms (Revit software, Civil 3D software, AutoCAD software, Navisworks software) to prevent miscommunications and downtime before it happens. The translation of data from party to party throughout the lifecycle of a project is vital. Join us as we discuss some of the do’s and don’ts developed throughout decades of relationships with these two projects.

This class will focus on how to make the most of tools you probably already have access to in Autodesk Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection and Autodesk Construction Cloud to start processing, analyzing, and maximizing drone photogrammetry data to improve your construction processes. Once at scale, many companies will likely opt for a partner product designed especially for this entire workflow. But it's crucial to get buy-in before making this investment. At BL Harbert International, we found that the best way to accomplish this is by providing concrete examples throughout the company of useful applications on our own projects. To achieve that, we've used several tools already at our disposal in AEC Collection and Autodesk Construction Cloud. This class will step through a workflow of processing imagery in ReCap Photo, then analyzing in either AutoCAD software or Civil 3D software, and finally sharing with stakeholders and making annotations in BIM 360 software or Autodesk Build software.

Infrastructure Ontario and Metrolinx are working on delivering the Ontario Line—a new CA$10.9 billion, 16 km subway line with 15 stations running through the heart of Toronto, Canada. HDR is driving the development, design, and digital delivery of the project using Civil 3D software, Revit software, InfraWorks software, and BIM 360 software, combined with ArcGIS technology to effectively organize CAD, geographic information system (GIS), and building information modeling (BIM) data across an international project team. Using the BIM 360 Cloud Connector within ArcGIS, project information is connected from the BIM 360 design hub directly into a GIS, allowing single-source-of-truth sharing of information through multiple windows for extended-use cases of information sharing through a custom-built, purpose-driven GIS hub. The Ontario Line Planning Portal provides 500+ staff easy access to data and information via a suite of discipline-specific web applications for reviewing the latest 2D alignment, properties, utilities, survey, environmental impacts, and 3D station design.

Autodesk established the Industry Alliance for Interoperability in 1994, inviting 20 companies to work on neutral exchange formats for industry. This became the International Alliance for Interoperability (IAI) two years later with participation open to any interested parties, and was renamed again as buildingSMART International (bSI) in 2005. bSI develops and maintains the Industry Foundation Class (IFC) data model and Autodesk has to include infrastructure entities as IFC 4.3, which is set to become ISO 16739:3 in 2023. This presentation will detail Autodesk involvement in IFC 4.3 to ensure its suitability to industry requirements and compatibility with engineering software. Autodesk product leads will cover how it’s transforming IFC support by adopting the Open Design Alliance (ODA) IFC toolkit for a range of its products, implementing pioneering infrastructure support for IFC 4.3 within Civil 3D software, and covering new investments to extend IFC capability across a wide range of solutions.

The rupture of the dam in Ayrton Senna Park in Brazil impaired one of the few tourist attractions in a small town in the Brazilian countryside, generating significant social and environmental impact. Schettini Engenharia understood that for this atypical situation, it would be necessary to bring together some strategic partners to develop the entire building information modeling (BIM) solution with the help of geographic information system (GIS) solutions, starting the first smart-city project in the region. Using Autodesk and Innovyze solutions, the firm aimed to adopt sustainable practices in its proposal, mitigating part of the damage caused by the rupture of this dam, and bringing safety and better quality of life to this community. In this challenging dam case study, you’ll learn the workflow between the following tools: ReCap software, Civil 3D software, Revit software, Autodesk Docs software, Navisworks software, Unity, InfoDrainage, and InfoWorks ICM.

This presentation will showcase how HDR is using Autodesk’s linear bridge modeling workflow on megaprojects in Los Angeles, CA, and Ontario, Canada. Autodesk’s Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection and Inventor software are being used to create 3D models for elevated guideways, bridges, and tunnels, among other civil structures. The demonstrated workflow will show creation and placement of parametric parts in Inventor and InfraWorks software, use of Civil 3D alignments and corridors to define linear paths, and cross-discipline coordination in Revit software and Navisworks software. We’ll also discuss construction phasing, support-of-excavation structures, and use of the model as source geometry for sheet production. The point of the session is to demonstrate the dynamic ability and versatility of the linear bridge modeling workflow as it was used on two multibillion-dollar megaprojects.

InfoWorks ICM assists engineers and designers in understanding the impacts projects have on the environment. Extreme events continue to stress local and regional civil infrastructure, and our tools and techniques must change as we design projects in our communities. InfoWorks ICM enables team collaboration and empowers engineers to reach beyond single-purpose tools to evaluate various options against a multitude of rainfall events within the context of the entire watershed. This technical instruction class will help users through a number of considerations to preserve Civil 3D designs in evaluation of possible flood damages across the wide range of flood scenarios.

Pressure networks in Civil 3D software have been around for a long time, yet very few people use them. A major reason has been that the tools have been difficult to use. Good news! This has all changed with Civil 3D 2021. Pressure networks received a major overhaul that make using them worth the switch from gravity pipe networks, or whatever stopgap measure you might be using. We’ll demonstrate how to use pressure networks for watermain, maximizing the new path-based workflow that links pressure pipe runs to alignments and profiles. Gone are the days of individual part-based design, including weird bend rotations and clumsy vertical design. Whether you only show watermain in plan, or need full profile and sections views, pressure networks are the way to go moving forward. Join Phil Northcott of C-Change Labs and Tim Burnham of Autodesk Consulting to explore new free carbon-analysis tools for design and procurement of infrastructure projects like water and transport networks. We’ll explain the climate impact of concrete and steel, discuss key opportunities for low-cost impact reductions, and cover how to communicate options and savings to stakeholders. As large point cloud data sets become ubiquitous in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) community, open-source libraries and software dedicated to manipulating these data sets are valuable tools for civil engineers and those in the geospatial community. Entwine is a free online cloud repository that anyone can access, and with this technical instruction, you can go from zero (knowledge) to office hero in minutes!

With our post-pandemic industry emerging into a new normal, our designers and engineers are now looking to technology to enhance collaboration and improve efficiency. With Civil 3D software we now have functionality to provide users with standards to drive consistency in workflows. We’ll review the process GHD developed to restructure Civil 3D templates, providing its teams with the necessary standardization and functionality—from small sites to large building information modeling (BIM) megaprojects. We’ll show you how to rethink template deployment, and what content to distribute. Learn how to restructure your templates using the best practice uses. We’ll share some of our tricks to maximize the benefits templates can offer. Using Dynamo and reference templates, we’ll demonstrate how we used property sets to automate the way GHD enriches the metadata in our intelligent models. We’ll cover the initial challenges, solutions, and ways we improved efficiency and realized more project cost savings.

Managing geotechnical data in Civil 3D software has been a challenge throughout the years. Autodesk has introduced the Geotechnical Modeler extension for Civil 3D 2022. With this free extension you can export subsurface data from gINT or other methods and create CSV files that will import directly into Civil 3D. This data will enable you to display your borehole sticks in plan view or on a profile, and even export them for 3D use in InfraWorks software. We’ll review the workflow of how to manage your data with a local database, then import that data into an existing Civil 3D project. Then we’ll focus on creating stratum surfaces and subsurface profiles from that data. We’ll also review the sample files and the config file, manipulating them to change the styles of our boreholes—including hatch patterns at a certain scale. The end result will be a dynamically linked drawing containing geotechnical data completely compatible with your Civil 3D design.

Since 2015, engineering companies have been developing their abilities to use Autodesk technologies in the automation of the modeling of linear civil infrastructures such as bridges and tunnels. But what about all the other railway linear infrastructures disciplines—such as fencing, hydraulic structures, track, catenary, and tunnel MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) elements—that need to be fully integrated in the design? In this class, we’ll review how we can enhance intelligent modeling automation workflows in Revit software and Civil 3D software for these disciplines. We’ll use the example of the Etihad Rail project where SYSTRA has developed a large-scale automation strategy using the in-house solution BIMinOneClick.
