Open-Source License Dashboard and User’s Real-Time Data
This class will analyze data from the FlexLM License Manager to create a live license dashboard using an open-source set of tools. We’ll use Business Intelligence platforms (BI) and MY SQL to identify the demand and consumption of licenses per application, group of applications, and users per design team. The interactive dashboard will provide valuable statistics of the license usage per software, which help to predict the license consumption for future projects.

How to Build a Company-Wide Drone Program
PCL Construction started flying drones on its projects more than 2 years ago. Today, it’s running a robust drone program on projects across North America, with dozens of pilots and hundreds of people using drone maps and models on a daily basis for site planning, progress tracking and reporting, quality control, and much more. In this session, PCL Construction and its drone partner, 3DR, will provide an inside look into how PCL built and scaled its drone program across the company. Bill Bennington, national quality manager, and Nico Bonnafoux, senior customer success architect at 3DR, will together host the session, and will cover how to implement a drone software platform effectively, navigate legal and compliance concerns, build an in-house drone team with flight procedures and fleet management, securely share data and make it accessible to project teams through BIM 360 software, scale drone operations across multiple projects, and establish an effective vendor-customer feedback loop.

Laser-Scanning Workflows for Construction Sites: Reality Capture, Modeling, and BIM
Have you ever found yourself working on an architecture, engineering, and construction project with incomplete information about the existing conditions around which you will install new work? In this class, we will explore laser-scanning reality capture workflows that bring honest and accurate measurements to the drafting and coordination tables. This class will focus on needs for implementing laser scanning on your jobsite. We will look at the setup, challenges, and time requirements of using laser scanners on jobsites. Then we will look at postprocessing techniques where raw data is transformed into a coherent point cloud. Next, we will explore the combination point cloud / photo collection product via ReCap software. Last, we will see how to pull the point cloud into design software like Revit software and AutoCAD software for modeling purposes, and how to overlay the point cloud onto 3D models of building elements through Navisworks software and ReCap software (we will review the ReCap software capability to represent models within the photosphere view).

Optimizing Fast-Paced Scan-to-BIM Projects Using ReCap, Revit, Navisworks
This class will discuss the workflow of using Autodesk software like ReCap Pro software, Revit software, and Navisworks software in a project where 6 commercial buildings with 340,000 square feet of floor space were renovated for a Silicon Valley tech giant in Mountain View, California. The project involved reality capture and modeling from point clouds resulting from scans. This case study highlights some of the challenges the team faced when dealing with the aggressive 30-day timeline, and suggests the means to overcome them in the scan-to-BIM process. We’ll also talk about the efficient clash coordination process used to finalize the constructability of the project that included the as-built 3D models developed from the scan-to-BIM process used by each trade sub in developing new designs. The attendees will learn the best workflow and tips using Autodesk software in tandem to achieve the right accuracy, the desired time savings, and the achievement of the BIM coordination schedule in time to meet construction deadlines.

ReCap Software: Scanning and Post Processing Workflows for All Manufacturing Plants
The main goal of this class is to walk attendees through the complete workflow of scanning the pressroom and basement at our FCA Sterling Stamping Plant located in Sterling Heights, Michigan. We’ll compare general baseline scanning to more-detailed equipment scanning. Participants will learn how scan data is collected, post processed, aligned, exported, decimated, segmented, and combined over time to create and maintain one virtual model of the largest stamping plant in the world. A key benefit of this class: sharing important ReCap software features and proposed ideas that can improve functionality and save post-processing time.

Large Scan-to-BIM Project: Merging Laser Scans with UAV to Get the Indoor and Outdoor
In this class, we'll present the reality capture process of a hospital that we realized by using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) captures for the exteriors and laser scans for the interior. We captured 1,200 laser scans and then merged them with a UAV-based point cloud extracted from 500 photos and 10 ground control points. Making this project a success required a thorough upstream preparation and a careful on-site implementation, and we will present both in this talk. We'll explain the methodology involved in assembling such a project in ReCap Pro software, from the assembly of the scans to the verification of the resulting point cloud. We defined our own methodology for this process given the huge number of laser scans and the fact that they needed to be merged with the UAV scan. We'll also demonstrate how we capitalized on this reality data in Revit software to get the Building Information Modeling (BIM) model. We'll also demonstrate our point-cloud-based viewer in a fully immersive virtual reality experience like HTC Vive.

This hands-on lab will cover how to edit point-cloud projects in ReCap software for all disciplines and project types. We’ll review advanced documentation and annotation features to make it easier for all ReCap users to find equipment and rooms in the point cloud. We’ll also take a quick tour covering how to extract a piece of equipment for use in planning and general arrangements, or as a template for creating a 3D asset. Next, we’ll go over the demolition workflow and how we have created various demolition packages over the years at SSOE Group. Finally, we’ll review how to reduce storage on a network and use the undocumented feature of importing unified data sets in ReCap. No prior use of ReCap on a project is required, although it would be helpful to take a peek at the sample data provided with the application just to gain familiarity with the interface prior to the lab.

How, When, and Where Can Handheld Scanners Be Used in Construction
Should you consider adding this tool to your workflow? While there are some very powerful laser scanners that are accurate and fast for larger spaces, and photogrammetry that is cost-effective but not as accurate, there is a growing number of more-affordable handheld scanners that can be capitalized on to augment the as-built conditions, and in some cases they are more effective the other alternatives. We will discuss the current and forthcoming technology that may augment current scanning methods. This class will address the following questions: What is a reasonable expectation from a handheld scanner and return on investment? What is the workflow for maximizing the scanner’s use for as-built and quality assurance / quality control uses? How can we best capitalize on scanning at this scale? When is the right time to consider handheld versus other scanning technology? Where can this scanning method be most effective? This session features ReCap and Navisworks Manage.

Reality Capture: What Turner’s $600 Million Project Can Teach You
This course will cover what goes into a successful reality capture guideline and how it looks in practice. We’ll cover the software and hardware used to develop and maintain a successful reality capture program. We’ll also cover the client and trade partner expectations that come into consideration when beginning a reality capture workflow. The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry is moving toward scanning as a standard, but we’ll discuss how to justify the high cost of reality capture in a way that’s easy for all levels to understand. We’ll provide our real-world workflow as it is exists on a $500 million project, what we’ve learned, and where we’ve succeeded.

Using Reality Capture to Help with Hurricane Harvey Relief Efforts
Hurricane Harvey was a Category 4 storm that hit Texas on August 25, 2017. It caused $125 billion in damage, more than any other natural disaster in US history except Hurricane Katrina. It affected 13 million people from Texas through Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Harvey made landfall 3 times in 6 days. At its peak on September 1, 2017, one-third of Houston was underwater. In the first 24 hours, 2 feet of rain fell. Flooding forced 39,000 people out of their homes and into shelters. We got a chance to visit a friend and colleague who lost 3 cars, their entire first floor, and their folks’ home around the corner. By using photogrammetry, reality capture, drone footage, Revit software, and ReCap software, we were able to help record conditions for this devastating event.

Extracting Consumable Construction Intelligence from Reality Capture Data

Reality capture is a process of capturing as-is conditions as images or point clouds using various means, including laser scanners, LIDAR (light detection and ranging) sensors, 360º cameras, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and more. All of these different modes spit out different output files that can then be converted to usable point cloud or vector data. Extracting construction intelligence from the point cloud or vector data and sharing it in a consumable format is the key for the success of any reality capture process. This class will detail laser scanning and UAV data-capture and intelligence-extraction workflows for different use cases, such as quality control/quality assurance, construction planning, site logistics, data-rich 3D modeling, intelligent as-builting, construction progress reporting, and so on.

Planning for Reality Capture
Laser scanning and flying drones can gather lots of data, but what can be done with it? Scanning for existing conditions is easy, but what about site monitoring, steel monitoring, concrete analysis, or installation comparison? Reality capture is often the fastest way to collect the information for these types of activities, but they have to be properly planned for, and strategies need to be in place so that time isn't wasted collecting data that won't be used. This session will focus on planning reality capture activities for success, and developing strategies for making sure the data can be turned into deliverables as quickly as possible.

Realities of Reality Capture: Plan Do Check Act
This session will cover how SSOE Group has changed its delivery process on retrofit projects to reduce waste in the engineering and construction process as a standard of care for its clients. The key point of this entire process is reliance on the laser scan and all team members working with the data in ReCap software, Navisworks software, and the modeling platform (Revit software, AutoCAD Plant 3D software, AutoCAD Civil 3D software, or AutoCAD software). We'll cover how to plan your projects for reality capture, and bust myths on what you can or can not do. We'll present training materials and how to plan for making sure your team is adequately trained when your project begins to ramp up. Last, we'll review how to slam dunk your client and/or contractor review meetings with reality capture data and be the talk of the preferred suppliers among your peers.

Navisworks Manage—Empowering Clash Detection

Clash detection and interference checking have greatly improved how we deal with issues during the design phase. But without a comprehensive method for managing interferences, we quickly end up with thousands of meaningless clashes. To enhance your coordination process we will present some rules to improve clash detection and management during design phases. We will illustrate this class with a case study from Paris where clash detection helped to find and solve coordination problems on a complex laboratory project. This class will covers various methods for creating an efficient clash-detection matrix, import Revit software models in Navisworks Manage software, set up the associate selection sets, and run clash detection. We will see how to group clash results into meaningful reports, and how to automate this process using Navisworks software plug-in. Finally, we will see how to use these clash reports for measuring progress in the coordination during the design phase.

This class will focus on the BIM for Aqualculture Project delivered in Nordic by Kruger Kaldnes, part of Veolia Water Technologies, comprising world-class technical know-how and technologies for water purification. Go from Proposal Stage to Precon to Construction Using BIM 360 and the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has selected the design of its new Southern California headquarters located on a 19-acre site near the campus of University of California Riverside. The approximately 380,000-square-foot facility will be one of the largest and most advanced vehicle-emissions testing and research facilities in the world. It will also be the largest “net-zero energy” structure (producing as much energy as it uses) of its type in the nation. Learn how Hensel Phelps and U.S. CAD used the Architecture, Engineering & Construction Collection to procure, win, and manage a project through design into construction.
