During Autodesk University 2019, we saw many applications of Autodesk’s generative design features. Most of them shared one common feature: the final model was heavily modified from the generated shape. Adapting the generative design outcome for production and meeting usage requirements—sometimes sophisticated—is the most time-consuming and problematic task. Although this topic raises doubts and ambiguities, it seems to be largely overlooked and insufficiently explained. It's like a bottleneck in a smooth generative-design workflow—like a gap between an excellent generative solver and many established manufacturing methods. We want to bridge this gap and comprehensively address this issue for anyone working with or interested in generative design. By better understanding the solver, knowing the restrictions in manufacturing, and discovering right techniques, you can not only post process an outcome faster, but even generate it smarter to have a production-ready model that meets all expectations!

Objective and quantitative performance measurement is increasingly critical to successful AEC firms and their projects, yet executives, managers, and project teams are often unsure about what to measure, and how, in order to proactively monitor performance. With proven methods, international case studies, and interactive exercises, Strategic Building Innovation•bimSCORE (SBI•bimSCORE) will demonstrate the practical implementation of targeting methodologies and key measures of performance developed at Stanford University’s Center for Integrated Facility Engineering (CIFE). These techniques have been applied to over 165 AEC projects, adopted by owners, agencies, consultants, and contractors internationally, and proven to provide objective insight informing and justifying management decisions. Though these methods are broadly applicable to many facets of firm and project performance, their application is particularly valuable in navigating BIM and technology adoption decisions.

This round-table discussion will focus on the various Building Information Modeling (BIM) standards from around the world, the benefits and adverse effects they cause, and the ways they may help or hinder progress as it grows. Comments from experience are welcomed and encouraged.

In this class, a panel of experts from Autodesk will share tips and tricks to help you become more productive, and also answer questions from the audience about real-time problems. If you are currently battling a problem at your office, this is the class for expert advice. The class will start with a brief presentation to introduce the support organization, the speakers, and the current customer-support options. Attendees will be able to log questions before the class so that the experts can research and provide accurate answers. There will also be dedicated time for attendees to ask questions that were not submitted beforehand. Panel experts include members of the technical support, QA, and licensing teams.

Automated Machine Guidance (AMG) can be a very misleading phrase. While a machine might know what specific elevation a surface needs to be, the operator is responsible for the finished grade. It is important that the operator have all of the information and tools necessary to ensure that the equipment is producing proper design conditions. With only grade specified in an AMG model, it is easy for any operator to not truly understand what he or she is grading and the importance of particular grades. This roundtable session focuses on an open dialog about experiences with AMG and what kinds of data should and should not be communicated with the operator. We start this session by showing what Sundt Construction's current practices are for using AMG to communicate with operations personnel and then we discuss how the standards evolved. Next, the discussion opens up for attendees to share their experiences and talk about how the perfect AMG model would look. The true value of an AMG model is how efficiently and quickly it can be executed in the field. If you have any involvement in that process this class is for you.

In this class you will learn how bills of materials are customized to suit your company specific standards, how to connect the Project Explorer with lists, and how to format the output in regards to units, bar codes, formulas, and so on.

This class will cover the use of filters and view template to create trade-specific views in regards to the display of pipe and duct work in Revit software. Once the basic workflow is established, we'll see how we can automate this very tedious process with Dynamo software, and, finally, how we can use Microsoft Excel to create a dashboard to control the creation and view settings of trade-specific drawings. This is very useful in large projects with a very high number of mechanical systems and trades. We need a central way to handle this information. Also, as projects are ever changing, this method needs to enable changes as the project progresses.

During this panel discussion, we will explore some of the challenges facing today’s women in construction trades, and discover what can be done to better support them.
