In this hands-on lab, we will explore the simple, powerful, round-trip workflow between Revit 2017 software and Robot Structural Analysis Professional 2017 software. We'll start with a simple structural model of a building in Revit software, and we’ll develop an understanding of the analytical model that Revit software builds concurrently with the creation of structural geometry. We will then explore the Structural Analysis for Revit feature, which enables static and gravity analyses to be performed on the cloud directly from Revit software. Next, we’ll push that model into Robot Structural Analysis Professional software to perform a basic analysis and code group-based design. Finally, we’ll push the updated geometry from Robot Structural Analysis Professional software back to Revit software and observe that the model has been updated. This class will present reflections and guidelines on teaching Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology based on Autodesk® Revit® software at the postgraduate university level. It is based on my experiences in creating and running 3 courses for the Master Program at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Hong Kong. All the courses use Revit as a tool, but explore quite different functionalities and produce different results in the area of form design, parametric building components, and project documentation. The class will discuss how to use technology as a means to solve real design tasks and challenges. The general context of current challenges and opportunities for BIM development in the Hong Kong design and building industry will be presented as a background for the class.

This class focuses on some of the major new Revit 2014 API features. We look at API access to the project browser, dockable panels, copy and paste, command launching, the graphics pipeline, schedule formatting, and additions to the view API including demonstration and discussion of sample code. We also provide an overview of all the new Revit 2014 SDK samples. Note that prior .NET and Revit programming experience is required and that this class is not suitable for beginners.

Through these examples, we'll review the analysis parameters, the ways to perform the analysis, and the options available to review and validate the analysis results. This class will illustrate the benefits of the Direct Analysis Method and demonstrate the ways that the implementation of Robot Structural Analysis Professional software is efficient, customizable, and user-friendly. We will also discuss how the software considers the code-required stability effects.

Computing power is increasing exponentially, however, structural engineers are only starting to realize its power for design automation. This talk will focus on how this can be used to provide optioneering in early project stages, and investigate a computational scheme design tool. The talk will deconstruct the tool and its logic to demonstrate the integration between the various Autodesk packages and how this is formed into a cohesive product to provide valuable information for design teams. The tool provides metrics such as material cost, embodied C02, and program implications, while utilizing the Atkins Human-Centered Design toolkit to ensure a holistic appreciation of project requirements. The talk will feature exemplar uses of the tool on pilot projects and will quantify the increased value achievable over conventional design approaches. We will then discuss future improvements to the tool and how computational design could be used in other ways to improve structural design.

Robots provide a unique platform for machining large volumes as well as for a vast range of other applications, including trimming, gluing, polishing, and the laying down of a huge variety of different materials. This workshop will introduce you to the basic concepts involved in creating the path as well as controlling the robot axis to drive your manufacturing processes.

Using Revit software, plumbing engineers and designers are able to capitalize on Building Information Modeling (BIM) data and 3D views to more effectively communicate design intent, while at the same time reducing overall production hours on projects. This class will walk through methodologies and concepts, such as the tagging of BIM components, when it is viable to use an isometric versus an enlarged plan, filters to display specific piping systems, and visibility graphics related to plumbing families and links. In this class, you will learn how to model and make the Hulkbuster Suit, which was featured in the Iron Man movie series, with Fusion 360 software. The Mark XLIV Armor, better known as the Hulkbuster, is Tony Stark's 44th Iron Man suit, made with the help of Bruce Banner. The armor was brought into play to protect Wakanda from Thanos's invading army in this year’s blockbuster movie Avengers: Infinity War. We'll explore the digital workflow with Fusion 360. Using ReCap software to convert human scan data to mesh model, we’ll use Fusion 360 to model the suit to fit the human mesh. We’ll then create pattern creation with ExactFlat Online, lay out a nested flat pattern, and cut out stock sheet using Fusion 360 CAM 2D profile cutting. We’ll assemble all the parts together, and the Mark XLIV Armor will be finalized with perfect shape and size. The Hulkbuster Suit model for this class can be viewed on the Fusion 360 gallery.
