Jacobs Buildings, Infrastructure and Advanced Facilities (BIAF) Line of Business (LOB) needed to bring together the disparate Approaches to delivering work to our clients to ensure every project met Clients needs with best possible outcomes. This meant leveraging the global experience, knowledge and innovation of our diverse backgrounds to identify and deliver best practice solutions in strategic partnership with our main software providers, notably AutoDesk. Autodesk used their Work Process approach to facilitate global market discussions to support the strategic business direction. The process started in February 2017 to establish the current position and the art of the possible in the near future. This was on the heels of the Global Company Strategy announced in December 2016 and focused on six key BIAF markets; Highways, Water, Buildings, Aviation, Rail and Advanced Facilities.
Focusing on these markets the global experts were brought together to establish the current best practice approach within each market, and agree a standard workflow, no matter where the work was required. By also linking tools to activities, this approach not only identified the best activities but also the most appropriate software to support the activity. A key criteria of tool selection is interoperability and data centricity, directly linked to activities identified in each of the standard workflows. This alone has standardized the global tool set, bringing significant financial savings and vastly improving the ability to leverage global integrated delivery.
However, technology is advancing at an incredible rate and it is incumbent on us to not only stay on top of developments but to focus them on providing best value solutions to our Clients. During our process of identifying the best tools, we were also able to identify where best benefit could be achieved by developing and automating activities through software deployment. This approach has been embedded within the structure of the organization by forming a Solutions and Technology Team to focus on staying at the forefront of innovation and how technology can be applied to our meet our clients’ needs
