It turns out that the older we get, the less we remember the teachings of our youth. In the design world, we are constantly reliant on the data of others, and they're reliant on us. We live in a world where many people are still working locally and emails still reign supreme. Cloud tools have unlocked the possibilities of collaboration, but if everyone isn't contributing, these tools are no better than the email threads of the past. A design mistake costs a lot less than a construction mistake, and good data-sharing practices can mitigate many mistakes from making their way into construction. Out of these concepts and challenges, some major questions arise: When and how do we share with others? How often should we share? And how do we make sure that all project information is available to everyone? These are the questions we hope to answer, and we hope you'll join us to learn more!

Building information modeling (BIM) plays a pivotal role in design, construction, and operations, integrating multidisciplinary data to paint the full picture of the project for greater visibility and decision making. That picture starts to get blurry and unreliable when data isn't accurate or relevant. How do you cut through all that noise to deliver a usable and trustworthy model / data set? Every model goes through distinct phases: authoring, preparation, and actual use. The model can have many downstream uses, but for it to be of value, the model itself must be prepped and the rich data within organized. We have assembled innovative virtual design and construction (VDC) leaders at Gray, Metromont, and Accenture to share how they approach complex models to ensure quality and data-driven deliverables. They will share the processes they have in place to perform QC checks of the models for construction preparedness, and they'll discuss data curation from models and field data to prepare for AI workflows to inform future projects.

Model-based technology can virtually identify and eliminate clashes. Unfortunately, that doesn't always translate to accurate, conflict-free layouts on the jobsite, especially when done separately by each trade contractor. New research from Dodge Construction Network shows that this traditional noncollaborative approach to jobsite layout is inherently inefficient, and frequently generates cross-trade conflicts and construction errors that cause multiple quality, safety, productivity, cost, and schedule issues. The research further shows that more-coordinated and collaborative multitrade processes greatly improve outcomes for everyone involved, especially when taking advantage of exciting new automation technologies that use model data.
