Cutting Things in Half

Julie Kumar

In this series of projects, Julie Kumar employs a waterjet cutter to cut things in half, including telephones, adding machines, cuckoo clocks and vacuum cleaners. By looking inside objects—both common household items and fabricated castings—the artist creates surreal sculptures that deftly leap from the everyday to the surreal.
