James R. Herman Memorial

Floating Point Collective

Brooklyn-based art and design collective Floating Point developed an interactive monument dedicated to the memory of James R. Herman, a champion for organized labor and social justice. It is sited at the Pier 27 cruise terminal in San Francisco, which serves 200,000 visitors each year.

The 10’ x 15’ wall-mounted memorial was fabricated with flexible LED panels and custom-finished aluminum panels, designed in organic shapes inspired by the ocean. Using a motion-sensing camera to track visitors’ movements, the sculpture actively encourages people to engage with it by animating undulating patterns of light in response to their presence. Terminal staff is able to easily control the sculpture’s operations via a web portal.
