Autodesk Resource Center Guide (step by step guide)

Please refer to the Design the Future Autodesk Resource Center Guide here for more details on licensing strategies and process flows for obtaining software.

Program eligibility requirements

Do I qualify for the Design the Future program?

We require that schools receiving free software licenses meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a degree granting public or private high school or middle school in one of the 50 US states
  • Software usage is for students age 13 and higher
  • Open to new or existing Autodesk customers

Program application tips

  • Autodesk software is issued to the individual school site listed, not to the program applicant
  • Each individual school site is required to be associated with an Autodesk Resource Center account
    • Refer to the Design the Future Autodesk Resource Center Guide for software management tips in the Appendix section)
    • Software for the institution can be managed individually as a separate Autodesk Resource Center account or at the school district level within a singular Autodesk Resource Center account with each school within the district registered inside that account
  • By default, the applicant will receive all program service communications such as account activation, product and licensing information

Existing Autodesk Subscription customers

For schools who purchased licenses to Autodesk software or subscription services in the past:

  • No refund or compensation will be provided to the school if you elect to participate or not participate in this program
  • Autodesk Subscription customers:
    • Subscription customers may continue using their existing subscription services without interruption
    • Continuation of subscription contracts is at the discretion of the school
    • Subscription for previous products purchased will not be extended to products acquired through this grant program

Can I add Autodesk subscription services?

The Autodesk software provided through the Design the Future program is not eligible for Autodesk subscription services.

I have questions about the Design the Future program, where can I get answers?

Please see this FAQ document.

About program approvals

All program applications are subject to internal eligibility reviews by Autodesk to determine if the institution meets the criteria for participation in the program. Autodesk reserves the right to make the final decision on program approvals.

When will I be notified of acceptance into the program?

We have streamlined the program approval process. The Autodesk Resource Center includes public and private secondary schools from a national database and pre-populated in the pull down menu for your region. Schools appearing in the listing are already pre-approved.

My school is not listed in the database. How do I add an institution?

Please refer to the Design the Future Autodesk Resource Center Guide for adding an institution in the Appendix section. All institution requests are subject to internal eligibility reviews by Autodesk to determine if the institution meets the criteria for participation in the program. Autodesk reserves the right to make the final decision on program approvals. Institution acceptance status should occur within 5 business days.

My institution request was not approved, why?

We understand that not every institution will qualify for the program per the stated eligibility requirements upon internal verification by Autodesk. Your institution request may have been declined for failure to meet any of the requirements stated in the program eligibility requirements section above. We thank you for your interest and we encourage you to apply for additional Autodesk programs in the future for which your institution may qualify.

License terms

What is the duration of the license?

The duration period for the license is three years from the date the software licenses are issued or approximately 1125 days.

Is the software license renewable at the end of the term?

Autodesk is committed to supporting Education and has introduced the free Autodesk licenses to empower educators and schools to help create the next generation of designers.  Our mission is to continue to support Education with offerings that support this mission and have no plans to curtail the offering today.

Software fulfillment

When will I receive my software?

Once your Autodesk Resource Center account application has been submitted and activated from a link in an email, the next step will be to add your institution(s) to your Autodesk Resource Center account. After adding an institution to your account you may request and download software immediately. Usually you may download software the same day that you registered for the program.

License types

Multi-Seat Stand-Alone License

Supports a specific number of users, allowing you to install, register, and activate one or more Autodesk products on several computers using a single serial number. They do not require network connectivity to run, however the software does need to manually be installed and activated on each computer.

Learn more about multi-seat stand-alone licenses.

Note 1: For the multi-seat stand-alone licenses the same serial number and product key will be used for all products with the same version number, i.e. 2013, 2014.

Note 2: There is a different serial number for the Education Master Suite and Entertainment Creation Suite.

Network Licenses

Network licenses are ideal for larger schools that require many individuals to access and use Autodesk software from multiple locations or labs.

A network license supports the use of Autodesk products up to a maximum number of users or "seats", who are connected to a server network. The products can be installed on as many computers as desired; however, at any one time, can only run on the maximum number of computers for which licenses have been given. Because you can install the products on more systems than the number of licenses purchased, you get true floating licenses across your entire organization.

A software utility known as the Network License Manager (NLM) issues licenses to users, up to the number of seats purchased. If all network licenses are in use, no more computers can run the Autodesk product until a license is returned to the NLM. The NLM is supported by the three possible server models:

Note: When installing software that will utilize a network license, the same serial number will be used for all products with the same version; i.e. 2013 or 2014. However a different Product Key will be used for each product. The serial number and product keys will be given when the software is downloaded.
